What is Body Image Disorder?
Body Image Definition
Body image is how you think and feel about your body. It’s the thoughts and emotions that come up when you look in the mirror or imagine yourself…
It’s like a personal conversation you have with yourself about how you see your own unique shape.
Body Image Disorder Definition
Body image disorder is also called Body Dysmorphic Disorder – BDD. Here’s my take on what Mayo Clinic says…
Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a mental health condition where you can’t stop thinking about flaws in your appearance — even if they seem small or invisible to others.
This can make you feel…
- Embarrassed
- Ashamed
- Anxious
- Unworthy of love
causing you to avoid social situations.
When you have BDD, you become…
- overly focused on your looks
- you spend a lot of time body-checking, grooming, or seeking reassurance.
You may also have perfectionist tendencies…
These behaviors and your belief in your flaw can bring you a lot of anguish. And make it challenging to function in your daily life.
Sometimes, you might think about getting cosmetic procedures to fix what you see as a flaw. But even if it gives you temporary relief, the anxiety usually comes back… Causing you to look for other ways to “fix” it.
So now that you know what BDD is — find out what causes body image disorder…

What Causes Body Image Disorder?
This is a question that, unfortunately, doesn’t have a one size fits all response…
Like many other mental health conditions, body dysmorphia may result from a combination of issues…
Some of the most common contributing factors are:
- Painful experiences of trauma
- Hurtful emotional abuse
- Dysfunctional family dynamics
- Excessive teasing or bullying
Here’s a more extensive list of potential BDD causes…
- Cultural pressures and societal beauty standards that promote unrealistic ideals
- Negative comments, criticism, or bullying about appearance from others
- Comparing yourself to unrealistic or edited images in the media
- Traumatic experiences related to appearance, such as body shaming or physical abuse
- Low self-esteem and poor self-image
- Personal experiences of rejection or feeling inadequate
- Genetic and biological factors contributing to vulnerability
- Mental health conditions like anxiety or depression that influence body perception
- Abnormal brain function or abnormal levels of the brain chemical called serotonin
- History of body-related trauma or past experiences with eating disorders
- Lack of positive body representation and diversity in the media
Remember, my beautiful friend, these causes can play a part in body image disorder. But knowing them can empower you on your path to healing and accepting yourself.
But by the grace of God, I am what I am.

Here’s a simple explanation of some terms you might have heard before.
There’s a lot of body image “buzz” going around.
Body positivity, body neutrality, and body acceptance are some of the most popular names — so let’s start with those…
Difference Between Body Positivity • Body Neutrality • Body Acceptance
1. Body Positivity
Body Positivity is a mindset that promotes love, acceptance, and celebration of all body types, regardless of societal beauty standards.
- It encourages embracing diversity and recognizing the inherent worth and beauty in every body.
- Body Positivity aims to counteract negative body image by fostering self-love, confidence, and compassion towards yourself and others.
2. Body Neutrality
Body Neutrality focuses on shifting the focus away from appearance and placing emphasis on your value beyond your physical attributes.
- It encourages you to detach your self-worth from your body and embrace the idea that your looks do not determine your value.
- Christ paid the highest price for you… your value is as high as it gets 🙌.
- Body Neutrality aims to foster acceptance and self-compassion without putting excessive emphasis on body image. It allows you to redirect your energy towards more meaningful aspects of life.
3. Body Acceptance
Body Acceptance involves embracing and respecting your body as it is, including your unique shape, size, and imperfections.
- It emphasizes self-acceptance and acknowledges that bodies naturally come in a variety of forms.
- Body Acceptance encourages letting go of unrealistic diet culture ideals and promoting a healthier relationship with your body and self-esteem.
