How to Love Yourself
3 Loving Actions You Can Take to Practice Self-Love
Letās jump right into the first ā and probably most important ā step or act of self-loveā¦
1. Set Boundaries
When you set boundaries, youāre drawing a line that helps you say no when needed so youāre not always stretched too thin. Emotional boundaries are super important! Because when you learn to say no, you respect your own needs (without feeling guilty). This way, youāre not overcommitting, and you can look after the needs of others with intention and love.
I feel like we need to pause here for a moment because, as Christians, our greatest commandments are to love God and love others. So, you might ask yourselfā¦
āHow can I say no when Iām supposed to love?ā
Hereās the thingā¦
Thereās a fine line between being consumed by your insecurities (lack of self-love) and being obsessed with yourself ā in both cases, your heart is caught up with āME.ā You become your idol and you struggle to offer selfless love or live entirely for Godās glory (another commandment).
And thatās precisely why my focus on self-love isnāt about placing worth on who you are, what you look like, or what skills or talents you have, but on Whose you are ā His beloved and precious daughter.
By setting these boundaries, youāre not just protecting your time and energy ā youāre actively practicing self-love, which is crucial to understanding what it truly means to love yourself.
Ok, now that weāve cleared that up, letās move on to another great way to practice self-love, shall we? š
2. Practice Gratitude
Start each day with a simple yet powerful practice: gratitude. Take a moment to reflect on what youāre thankful for. This isnāt just a nice thing to do ā it can literally shift your mood and help you focus on what God is doing in your life.
When you recognize the good, it can dramatically boost your spirits and alter your perspective. It helps you appreciate the blessings around you, big or small š
Practicing gratitude daily is a foundational step in embracing what it means to truly love yourself.

3. Loving-Kindness Meditation
Loving-kindness meditation might sound a little unconventional if you havenāt tried it before, but itās incredibly impactful!
Hereās what itās aboutā¦
In the Bible, meditation means deeply thinking about Godās Word and His promises. Christian meditation focuses on filling our minds with Scripture, not emptying them as in some Eastern traditions.
You might meditate on a specific Bible verse, pray about it, or listen to worship music that highlights its message.
Hereās an exampleā¦
You could focus on Godās love for us, as mentioned in 1 John 4:19, āWe love because He first loved us.ā
Reflect on this unconditional love, then ask God that you feel it toward yourself and spread it to others. Pray for peace and joy for yourself, your family, friends, and even those you find challenging to love ā ask God to help you see them as Christ does.
Loving-kindness meditation strengthens your Christian walk and helps you align your heart more closely with Godās command to love others.
