From one recovering perfectionist to another…
You might often feel pressured by society’s unattainable standards for perfection. The big screen, social media, and even casual conversations can make it seem like your worth is measured by your appearance or accomplishments.
But let’s take a look at what perfection really means through Jesus’ teachings…
Bible Verses About Perfectionism
What Does God Say About Perfectionism?
There are 2 things that come to mind…
I’m sure you’ve heard of the first one, it’s the famous “no one is perfect verse…”
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
The apostle Paul says in Romans 3:23, that our righteousness is in and through Jesus and that no human being is perfect!
There was only one perfect man to walk this earth, and by grace, He makes us acceptable — perfect — before the Father… (Thank you Lord 🙌🏼)
Now, you’re probably thinking…
“But Wanda, didn’t Jesus tell us to be perfect?”
I’m glad you asked 😊
The answer is yes, He sure did!
And that brings us to the second verse that comes to mind when I think of “What does God say about perfectionism?”
It’s Matthew 5:48…
Matthew 5:48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
In case you’re wondering…
This is not a contradiction!
In fact, what Jesus is emphasizing here isn’t about being flawless in every aspect of your life — achieving an “ideal body image” — or following the demanding standards of diet culture, the workplace, and even in church.
Instead, the love of God invites you to…
- actively pursue spiritual growth and maturity.
- align your character, morals, and values with God’s.
- live true to the identity God has created for you.
Does God Expect Us to Be Perfect?
You can sigh with relief because — God absolutely does not expect you to be perfect 😅.
The perfectionistic tendencies that drive you toward unrealistic expectations of beauty or otherwise are rooted in fear…
Fear of failure or fear of not being enough — perfectionism doesn’t stem from genuine aspiration.
Striving to create perfect conditions or to perfect yourself with your own efforts — can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure. But today, you have grace and the power of Christ to help you!
Do you remember the Pharisees?
The Pharisees were the perfectionists of their time. They focused intensely on outward obedience and missed the heart of God’s message.
Their story teaches us that obsessing over external accomplishments and appearances can lead to a judgmental and prideful spirit — which is not what God desires for us.
My beautiful friend, remember that God knows you and I are incapable of being perfect — that’s why He gave us His Son!
Through Christ we have grace! 🥰
How to Overcome the Spirit of Perfectionism
You can find the strength to overcome these pressures — not by striving for an impossible perfection — but by embracing the grace that covers your imperfections.
Grace is truly a gift for all of the children of God — including those of us navigating these tough — sometimes paralyzing — feelings.
Grace frees you to be your genuine self in God’s presence and empowers you through Christ to go beyond your perceived limits.
Ephesians 2:5 reminds us, “It’s by grace you have been saved.”
This grace means…
- experiencing Jesus every-single-day.
- receiving His strength to live well.
- to embrace the beauty He sees in you.
By shifting your focus from society’s impossible standards to God’s view of perfection — you can begin to heal from the wounds caused by worldly standards and toxic diet culture.
It’s about seeing yourself through God’s eyes, never-failing grace and love — and finding beauty in His creation — YOU.
And…
The good news is everything you need to shift your perspective is in the word of God! So here’s a selection of Bible verses about perfectionism.
You are wonderfully made — not to conform to anyone’s expectations — but to accept the unique person God designed.
