How To Overcome Limiting Beliefs
The most important thing to overcoming limiting beliefs and achieving spiritual and personal growth is to understand what your false beliefs are…
Understanding Your Limiting Beliefs
What are limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are those sneaky, often subconscious thoughts that creep up and convince you you can’t achieve or don’t deserve your biggest dreams. From feeling like you’re not enough (imposter syndrome, anyone?) to the fear of failure when trying new things.
And these beliefs can keep you from living your full potential — the life God designed for you.
The most common limiting beliefs are…
1. I’m not worthy of love
2. I’m not enough
3. I don’t deserve happiness
4. I’m not competent enough
5. I can’t
6. I’m powerless
7. I will always fail
8. I’m a burden to others
9. I’m too old
10. I’m not pretty enough
What are the limiting beliefs of Christianity?
Some examples of limiting beliefs Christians struggle with are…
1. Unworthiness
2. Fear of judgment
3. Not having faith in God’s plan
Now that you’re a little more familiar with what self-limiting beliefs are — you might be curious about how these beliefs become so ingrained in us.
In the next section…
We’ll look at the unexpected roots of these beliefs that influence how you see yourself and how you act.
What is the root cause of limiting beliefs?
Let’s break it down and use a real-life example — let’s do “I’m not pretty enough”…
The cause of your limiting belief may have started with:
Early Life Experiences
Think back to when you were growing up. Maybe family members made offhand comments about diets or criticized their own bodies in front of you. Perhaps you were teased about your appearance at school.
These negative experiences can deeply influence how you see yourself. You might STILL hear those voices in your head, telling you you’re not skinny enough, pretty enough, or ‘just not enough’.
Sadly, these experiences can affect — in a very powerful way — how you perceive your body now.
The Influence of Cultural Messaging
Society and diet culture bombard us with doctored images and twisted ideas of what beauty should look like…
For us Christian women, this pressure can be intensified by mixed messages within some Christian teachings that stress modesty — which, just like diet culture — implies that your worth is based on how you look or dress.
Unfortunately, these societal pressures can make you feel like you never measure up to EITHER worldly or spiritual standards!

Past Traumas
Perhaps you’ve experienced more significant traumas that have a profound impact on how you view your body — like hurtful comments from someone you love.
Or maybe you were bullied because of your appearance. These experiences can make you feel really bad for a really long time. And can lead to a long-lasting negative body image and low self-esteem.
Traumas like these can make you believe that your body isn’t a beautiful, good, or worthy part of who you are, which isn’t what God says about you at all! He believes you are wonderfully made.
(Just in case no one has told you this lately: you are perfect just as you are 👑)
So…
Now that you’ve seen this example, can you identify another false belief and figure out the source of the belief?
If you’re unsure, no worries — that’s what I’m here for 😉. Let’s continue…

What does the Bible say about limiting beliefs?
The Bible doesn’t use the term “limiting beliefs,” but it offers plenty of guidance on how to think and what to believe about ourselves and our lives.
Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by renewing our minds. This means changing the way you think by replacing lies with ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
The Bible also encourages us to trust in God’s plan and not to doubt His love or our worth in His eyes.
Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This is a reminder that your strength isn’t just from yourself, but you also have God’s power to help you.
Also…
2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches us to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Which means dismissing any thoughts that don’t align with God’s truth about who you are and what you can achieve 😊
Challenging Your Beliefs with Truth
Your beliefs CAN be changed.
It begins with making a conscious effort to challenge each negative thought (the lies you’ve believed) with absolute truth — God’s word.
- Replace “I’m not worthy of love” with Romans 8:38-39, affirming that nothing can separate you from God’s love.
- Replace “I’m not good enough” with Ephesians 2:10, reminding yourself that you are God’s handiwork, created for great things.
